Canada will have a new ultra-low-cost carrier with fares as low as CA$178 round trip. NewLeaf Travel based at Winnipeg Airport has announced that it would begin operating commercial flights out of the seven cities in Canada. It plans to launch service on February 12.

According to Statistics Canada, the average cost of a one-way flight in the first quarter of 2015 was CA$247.60. NewLeaf wants to reduce ticket prices to the market. The carrier launched its website Wednesday, advertising one-way flights within Canada for as little as CA$89.

To cut expenses, the new discount has decided to fly to smaller airports that offer lower landing fees. For example, instead of flying to Vancouver and Toronto-Pearson, NewLeaf will serve less-busy Abbotsford, BC and Hamilton, ON respectively.

We want to spread the love to Canada’s smaller airports because of their laid back atmosphere, cheaper parking and awesome baggage handling, a statement says on the company’s website.

The airline will commence operations on February 12, 2016, flying to seven destinations in five different provinces. NewLeaf plans to operate the fleet of Boeing 737-400 aircraft leased from Flair Airlines, in an all-economy configuration of 156 seats. The carrier says it plans to expand its fleet and number of flights in the years ahead.

NewLeaf aims to join the ranks of the world’s ultra-low-cost carriers, such as Spirit and Allegiant in the US or Ryanair and WizzAir in Europe. But this means a truly stripped-down flying experience.

Your fare gets you the two essentials: a seat and a seatbelt. The rest is up to you, the NewLeaf website states.

Canada’s newest airline will enable passenger to customize their travel experience by paying extra for having your boarding pass printed at the airport, purchasing refreshments on board etc.
