do you know what are the road conditions there? is it safe to rent a car?

In September the weather is breezy but snows are occasional (mostly in the interior). You should pay attention to the local website of the road administration: – they have a very detailed map with all the road conditions (updated in real time). You should always confirm your exact route on a map before setting out. Gas stations are located far between, so be sure to fill up when you spot them.

Some interior routes in more rural regions are impassable from October to April. If you’re planning to visit Iceland in winter, you may consider renting a four-wheel drive vehicle (affordable for 4 people travelling together). Make sure your vehicle has snow tires or chains and always pack a map, blankets, food and water to your car. In winter the weather and road conditions can change quickly and daylight hours are limited. You can check the local weather forecast on

at the end of September most highland roads will be already closed so 4WD as not necessary really. For a week you can rush it around the ring road seeing different attractions. Or you can stay in Reykjavik most of the time and do some day trips from there, maybe go north to Myvatn or Akureyri for a couple of nights and do day trips from there.

And hope for good weather. Especially clear skies for the northern lights
