    Yes they do, if you have more than 8 hours layover.

    I’m not entirely sure that is correct.
    Firstly it certainly isn’t law and so won’t apply to all airlines, some might have this as a policy and some might apply it only to business or first class passengers.
    In the case of Qatar they will put you up in a hotel if your transfer time is over 8 hours BUT it must be by schedule NOT by choice – if there is another flight leaving after 6 hours (for example) but you chose a flight that leaves 12 hours later because it was cheaper, they will NOT put you up in a hotel.
    I also warn you that the DOH airside hotel is f’ing expensive and visas to enter the country so you can get a cheaper (but none ‘cheap’) hotel costs ~£50 per person IIRC.

    The don’t pay a hotel if you’r travling in a promo fare.
