The world’s most populous island offers its visitors lots of attractions and activities. Volcanoes
Take a tour to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The active volcano of Mount Bromo (2329 m / 7641 ft) is one of the main highlights of East Java. The best way to explore it is to take a pre-dawn tour and reach the volcano in the early morning. You will have a chance to watch the majestic sunrise over the lip of the crater. A trek to the volcano from the nearby mountain village of Cemoro Lawang takes about 45 minutes, but it is also possible to take an organised jeep tour. Mount Merapi is one of the easier mountain hikes in Java. The volcano is still active and it last erupted in 2010.
You can also visit Mount Kawi (Gunung Kawi), a massive stratovolcano near Malang, in East Java. You'll find there several sacred shrines and burial tombs. True adventurers can hike up to Kawah Ijen, a 2639 m (8660 ft) active volcano. The largest acidic crater lake in the world sits at the top of the mountain. It is famous for the striking blue glow it emits. The crater is also known for sulphur mining. Every day about 300 miners make a climb up the mountain, then head downward into the volcano, where the sulphur crystals form. Indonesian men work hard in stifling heat and breathe in toxic fumes in the crater. The sulphur they mine is used for fertilizers, gunpowder and matches.
