U Bein Bridge
The oldest and longest teakwood bridge in the world stretches across the Taungthaman Lake near Amarapura. Construction on the 1.2-kilometre bridge, supported by over a thousand wooden pillars, was completed in 1851. It was built in curve shape in the middle to resist the assault of wind and water.
The bridge was made from the remains of the old royal palace of Inwa, a former Burmese capital. Today it is used as an important passageway for the local people. There are nine passageways in the bridge, where the floors can be lifted to let boats pass.
