Baikonur Cosmodrome
The spaceport located in southern Kazakhstan holds the record as the largest and oldest functioning space launch facility. Baikonur Cosmodrome is the place where Sputnik 1, Earth's first artificial satellite, was launched. The rocket that lifted Yuri Gagarin, the first human in outer space, has also started from Baikonur. In the last half century, there were more than 1500 spaceships launched from the cosmodrome.
Baikonur Cosmodrome is situated in the vast desert steppes east of the Aral Sea, far away from large centers of population. To visit this space launch center, you need to give 45 days' notice in advance. There are travel agencies that will help you arrange a visit.
