The northern part of the Namib Desert coast is quite inhospitable for ships. The cold water of the Atlantic’s Benguela current colliding with dry, warm air causes dense ocean fogs and heavy surf. The coastline of the oldest desert in the world is littered with whale bones and more than a thousand crumbling shipwrecks. Most of them lie buried deep in the sand but some can be seen up close. Only 800 people a year are allowed to visit Namibia's Skeleton Coast.
One of the coast's best-known wrecks is a German cargo ship, the Edouard Bohlen, which currently rests half-buried inland after crashing in 1909. Through the years, the coastline changed and the desert began to encroach on the ocean. Now the shipwreck is located about 500 meters (1640 feet) from the shore. Check the exact location on a map >>
