Lanzarote was once a lush island. However, after a series of violent eruptions in 1730-36, thick layers of ash and volcanic pebbles covered one third of the area. Long years after the disaster, the moonlike land was moulded by an artist César Manrique. They say that Lanzarote is Manrique's most important work of art. His vision of how man and the environment interact, infuses many of the island's top spots, like Mirador del Rio, Jardín de Cactus, El Diablo Restaurant and Jameos del Agua with its famous theatre in a cave. His desire to live with the volcanic lava has even led him to build his own house in the Taro de Tahiche (La Fundación César Manrique). The building was created over a stream of petrified lava. The uniquely shaped living rooms are located in the volcanic bubbles.
