The Maspalomas Dunes, Gran Canaria
The third-largest island in the Canaries’ archipelago offers a dramatic variation of terrain, ranging from the green and leafy north to the mountainous interior and desert south. The spectacular 4 square km field of dunes on the south coast was formed by sand from the bottom of the ocean, during the last ice age.
This nature reserve of special value includes a dynamic sand dune system, a beach, palm grove and a brackish lagoon. It's a unique natural wonder due to its beauty and range of ecosystems. Take the trail through the reserve and down to sunny Maspalomas beach. From the beach you can see the abundant wildlife in the lagoon and relax in the shade of the palm grove.
