Have the exotic snow experience in one of the Iranian ski resorts! The mountains above Tehran are home to some of the world’s best skiing, with a ski season from December to May – longer than Europe’s. Overnight snowfalls in excess of 50cm are not uncommon in the Alborz mountains. There are five ski pistes around Tehran (Dizin, Darbandsar, Tochal and Shemshak) that enjoy plentiful dry snow. The longest one is in Dizin resort, with lifts to 3,600 metres. Men and women are segregated and have separate lifts but are reunited at the top of the slopes, to enjoy the views of Iran’s tallest mountain Damavand (5,610).
The more professional ski piste is at Shemshak (at 3,050 metres). The slopes near Tehran are all accessible by road in around 1-2h. Another large mountain resort is Pooladkaf, 85km from Shiraz in the south, peaking at 3,400 metres and enjoying strong sunshine despite high snow totals.
