New Zealand is a geological hotspot and has many dormant and active volcanoes, geysers and hot springs. Hot Water Beach, with the natural springs bubbling through the golden sand, is one of the most popular geothermal attractions. It is located in Mercury Bay, on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 12 kilometres south east of Whitianga.
It is a place where you can make your own hot pool just few metres from the refreshing Pacific Ocean. Just dig into the sand allowing hot water to escape to the surface forming a spa pool. You can hire a spade or shovel from the local cafes. Naturally heated mineral water, with a temperature as hot as 64°C (147°F), filters up from two underground fissures, that can be found near the rocks at the southern end of the beach. The best time to visit this beach is within two hours either side of low tide.
