Isla del Sol, Lake Titicaca
Take a boat tour on the world’s largest high-altitude lake, located in the Andes Mountains, on the border of Bolivia and Peru. It is surrounded by ancient ruins and traditional villages. It’s possible to discover Horca del Inca, a pre-Incan astronomical observatory, located near the lakeside town of Copacabana. On the southern shore of the lake is Tiwanaku, a massive ceremonial area that was constructed around 1000 years ago from stones weighing more than 25 tons.
You can explore the Island of the Sun (Isla del Sol), situated in the southern part of Lake Titicaca This rocky, hilly island boasts over 80 ruins and many eucalyptus trees. In the religion of the Incas, it was believed that the sun god was born here. Archaeologists have discovered evidence that people lived on the island as far back as the third millennium BC. Most of the ruins date to the Inca period circa the 15th century AD. Among the ruins on the island are Titi Qala, a labyrinth-like building called Chinkana, Pillkukayna, and Q'asa Pata.
