Rafting the Nile offers a world-class adrenaline adventure, but the country’s most iconic experience is tracking mountain gorillas in their misty habitat. And if you view the Big Five, you’ll see that nature – diverse and resplendent – looms large here.
Over half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas live in Uganda. In the western part of the country you can go tracking the primate species on the borders with Rwanda and Democratic Republic of the Congo. You can also view mountain gorillas in their natural habitat at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. There are troops reached from Buhoma and Nkuringo.
One gorilla troop can be tracked from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The Virunga Mountains, containing the two most active volcanoes of Africa, are the dramatic spine of the park. Trekking the golden monkeys is another highlight of this undiscovered park. Kibale National Park, which protects moist evergreen rain forest, is home to a population of habituated chimpanzees and 12 other species of primates.

Tiny Rwanda‘s name may evoke memories of the horrific genocide that brutalised this country in 1994, but the country is better known today as one of Africa’s most stable nations, a plucky survivor that has come together in the decades since the dark times to create a promising and dynamic future. Tourism is once again a key contributor to the economy and the industry’s brightest star is the chance to track mountain gorillas through bamboo forests in the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes. These conical mountains are shrouded in equatorial jungles and helped earn Rwanda the moniker of ‘Le Pays des Mille Collines’ (Land of a Thousand Hills). So, while Rwanda’s scars may run deep, now is the time to help the country look to its future and embrace its new-found optimism.
With Rwanda’s new visa policy you’ll be able to apply for a visa on arrival with no prior formalities!
