Before Spanish colonization, the temple dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc (gods of war and water) served as the religious centre for the Aztec people. Today it's an active archaeological site tucked away in the centre of the city. The adjoining museum houses more than 7,000 artefacts from the site. The whole complex has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of Mexico City's most popular attractions.
The temple is located northwest of the Zócalo metro station. It's open for visitors from Tuesday to Sunday. You can save money by visiting on Sundays when admission is free.
