In the valley of the Roussenski Lom River, in north east Bulgaria, you'll find a group of monolithic churches, chapels, monasteries and cells hewn out of solid rock. This is where the first hermits had dug out their cells and churches during the 12th century, on the high rocky banks (32 m above the river).
The caves had been inhabited by monks from the 1220s to the 17th century. At the peak of the monastery complex, the number of churches was about 40, most of which are not preserved today. The complex is noted for its beautiful frescoes, preserved in 5 of the churches. These wonderful examples of Bulgarian mediaeval art testify to the exceptional skill of the artists.
