La Paz
While the official capital of Bolivia is Sucre, La Paz is the administrative capital. The city sits in a bowl surrounded by the high mountain peaks, with triple-peaked Illimani (6438 m / 21 122 ft) towering over. With elevation of 3,640 m / 11,942 ft, La Paz is a convenient gateway to the Altiplano (Bolivian Plateau) with its lunar landscapes and endemic fauna. The city boasts many of the country’s top museums and galleries, like the National Museum of Art. You can revisit the colonial past at Calle Jaen or practice your bargaining skills at El Alto Market. If you're looking for extraordinary attractions, you should wander around the famous Witches’ Market on Calle Linares, filled with all sorts of potions, lotions, and strange talismans.
If you fly to El Alto airport, you will enjoy gorgeous views as the bustling city in a crater comes to life when the plane approaches the runway. The city’s new urban cable car system Mi Teleférico, the longest and highest in the world, is also a great way to enjoy the views.
