Peaks of the Southern Atlantic submarine ridge form the islands off the coast of Brazil. Fernando de Noronha Island is Brazil's best kept secret. Atol das Rocas is located about 150 km west of Fernando de Noronha. This elliptical reef includes two small islands surrounded by a marine reserve. At low tide the atoll provides a spectacular seascape of lagoons and tidal pools teeming with fish. These rich waters are important for the breeding and feeding of tuna, shark, turtle and marine mammals. Together with the other islands of the archipelago, Fernando de Noronha and Atol das Rocas are under the auspices of UNESCO.
