Laos is a hidden gem among its more popular neighbours. This mountainous and landlocked country provides lush landscapes, true wilderness, rich cultural diversity and many historical sites. The stunning Southeast Asian destination is a great place for adventurous travellers.
Thousands of mysterious stone jars lie in ruin in the Xieng Khouang plain, in the Lao Highlands. To get there, you should take a plane or bus to Phonsavan. The stone structures are mostly made of sedimentary rock and each jar can weigh up to 14 tons. The researchers believe that they have once served as funerals urns or food storage.
The existence of similar jars in other parts of Asia also led to the theory that the structures were part of a large trade route. Some archaeologists believe that they collected monsoon rainwater for caravans to use during dry season.
