El Yunque National Forest
Enjoy the beautiful tropical environment of the lush rainforest of El Yunque, located one hour from San Juan. Arrive early to ensure you have plenty of time. Visit the Ranger Station for maps and hike along the reserve, admiring gorgeous orchids, exotic birds and other wildlife, including the national symbol, the Coquí tree frog. Take the trail to El Yunque Peak or the Yokahu Observation Tower for unbelievable views. Be sure to wear plenty of bug spray, bring water and snacks along with you.
Over many years, the rushing waters have made some of the river rocks into natural playgrounds. You may take either the La Mina Trail or the Big Tree Trail to access La Mina Falls. In the pristine, natural river pool you can take a refreshing swim or swing from a rope to the river. To enjoy the natural water slides, visit Las Paylas (Las Pailas) in Luquillo. The rocks are really smooth and make for some really fun slides!
