The Northeast region is one of the liveliest in Brazil. It’s a land of sunny beaches, colonial towns, unspoiled nature, and friendly people.
The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, is occupied by huge sandy dunes. This desert-like landscape in the middle of the jungle is an incredible natural phenomenon. The depressions between the sandy dunes fill with rainwater between July and September. The freshwater lagoons are perfect for a refreshing swim after a long hike up and down the dunes. Emas National Park is a wonderland of waterfalls, mountains and savannah. You'll also find there the glowing termite mounds.
Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara and Parque Nacional de Sete Cidades are famous for prehistoric paintings, archaeological findings, rock formations and wildlife. The first one contains the oldest prehistoric rock paintings in the Americas. Chapada das Mesas National Park is known for high plateaus, wild savannah, caves, valleys, waterfalls and green canyons. The area is home of a great variety of species of wild animals. Don't forget to visit the Blue Well – a deep flooded cave, which is considered the most beautiful in South America.
