Historic centres of Berat and Gjirokastra are inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list as rare examples of Ottoman architecture. Gjirokaster Castle, located in the Drinos river valley in southern Albania, is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent structures of the city. Berat also features a fortress, most of which was built in the 13th century, although its origins date back to the 4th century BC. Berat is believed to be one of the country’s oldest towns.
The Krujë Castle was the centre of Skanderbeg's rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. This elliptical citadel boasts the National Skanderbeg Museum, the remains of the Fatih Sultan Mehmed mosque and its minaret, an ethnographic museum and a Turkish bath. You can also discover the Bashtovë Fortress, located near the village of Vilë-Ballaj, or Rozafa Castle, near the city of Shkodër.
