Hanal Pixan (Day of the Dead)
From October 31st to November 2nd, the Mexican people celebrate their loved ones who have passed on. The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a cross-cultural festival, known in Yucatán as Hanal Pixán, which roughly translates to "food for the souls". On this holiday people welcome their departed loved ones back into their homes. The families visit their graves and enjoy a picnic in the cemetery. Gravesites are decorated with flowers and adorned with offerings of food, cigarettes and alcoholic beverages.
Traditions include building special altars using photographs and specially prepared food offerings to help deceased loved ones find their way home. Residents walk along the streets with skull-painted faces. In the markets Lucas de Galvez and San Benito in Merida you will find colored candles that are used to decorate the altars, and sugar skulls with names on the foreheads.
