The ancient cities
Merida, founded on the site of the ancient city T’ho, was the centre of Mayan culture in Yucatan. The Spanish conquistadors destroyed the five ancient pyramids and used their ruins to build Merida’s cathedral and other buildings. The remains of the pre-Hispanic city of Mayapan are only 40 kilometres away from Merida.
Majestic Chichén Itzá is the obvious choice for a Mayan ruin to visit. This archaeological site is dominated by El Castillo step-pyramid, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan, built by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. The Tulum ruins are the only ones built by the sea, so after sightseeing you can head down to the beach for a refreshing dip. Coba is a much larger site than Tulum and Uxmal is less crowded and has more interesting ruins. Ek' Balam is noted for several temples, two palaces and a large pyramid.
The Fives Downtown is located in Playa del Carmen and features a bar, private parking, fitness centre, rooftop pool and air conditioned rooms with flat-screen TV and free WiFi.
