Senegal's capital is the most westerly city on mainland Africa. Overlooking the Senegalese capital, the 49-metre African Renaissance Monument is Africa's tallest statue. Enjoy the live music that can be found every night in the vibrant capital of Senegal. Every Sunday on the beaches of Dakar, you can watch shepherds taking their sheep to the shore and washing them. You can learn all about the slave trade at the House of Slaves on Île de Gorée Islands, just a 20-minute ferry ride from Dakar. The island hides its horrific past - from the 15th to the 19th century, it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast.
On the outskirts of Dakar you can visit Les Mamelles Lighthouse, situated near Cap Vert - the westernmost point of Africa. The lighthouse is open to the public, with guided tours offered by the lighthouse keepers. Views from the lantern gallery provide panoramic views of the entire peninsula.
