Intensely colourful travertine pools of Huanglong were naturally formed out of limestone. This scenic area in Sichuan is located in the southern part of the Minshan mountain range. The hypnotizing landscape includes calcite banks, ponds with light blue, green and yellow water, travertine waterfalls and caves. The valley was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992.
The terraced hot spring pools gently flow between diverse forest ecosystems and rugged mountains with snow-capped peaks. The total length of the travertine in Huanglong Valley is 3.6 km. The most scenic part of the area begin at the Benbo temple and leads to the Xishen Cave Waterfalls where the main site ends. Huanglong also has a population of endangered animals, including the giant panda and the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey.
