Saint-Louis, full of history and charm, was the colonial capital of the whole of French West Africa until Dakar usurped it in 1902. Along with the Island of Gorée, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Uninhabited Isles de la Madeleine - the smallest national park in the world - can be reached with a boat ride from Dakar's southwestern bay. Mar Lodj is a small, car-free island in the Saloum Delta. Protected by a national park, one of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Senegal is home to an abundance of flora and fauna. Fadiouth Island, linked to the town of Joal by a bridge, is made out of clam shells. Houses, pathways and even graveyards on Fadiouth are made from seashells, which crunch under your feet wherever you walk. It has large Christian and Muslim populations with cemeteries on another shell island, connected to Fadiouth via stilted wooden bridge.
