Boasting three of the ancient Silk Road’s most important cities (Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand), Uzbekistan was once the cradle of culture and trade. Nowadays, it is known for well-preserved Islamic architecture with shimmering minarets and mosaic tile domes.
Khiva
Khiva was the last resting place of caravans before crossing the desert to Iran. This ancient town, hidden deep down in the desert, was founded in the 6th century. Itchan Kala, the inner town of the old Khiva oasis, is protected by brick walls some 10 m high. Boasting ornate mosques, mausoleums and madrassas, it is a well-preserved example of the Muslim architecture of Central Asia and it's protected as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The most spectacular features of Itchan Kala are the old city walls and four gates, one at each side of the rectangular fortress. The old town retains more than 50 historic monuments and 250 old houses, including several outstanding structures such as the Djuma Mosque, the mausoleums, the madrasas and the two magnificent palaces built at the beginning of the 19th century.
