Things to do in Greenland
Greenland, the autonomous nation within the Kingdom of Denmark, is famous for clean air, summer midnight sun, green mountains, icebergs, fjords, cliffs, and hot springs. The largest non-continental island in the world is surrounded by glaciers and 80% of its area is covered with ice.
Get right up close to massive glaciers on the edge of towns and settlements. Cruise the Eqip Glacier, located 80 km north of Ilulissat. Seabirds and marine life is frequently spotted in the area. It is an exceptional experience to be drifting in a boat in front of this magnificent glacier that stretches for 5 km. It calves regularly and it offers an exclusive opportunity to witness how large and small chunks of ice break off. The waters around the glacier are full of icebergs.

Where to stay:
In Kangerlussuaq we encourage you to stay at Old Camp with good reviews. The basic style rooms have a wardrobe and desk. Bathrooms are shared. Bed linen and towels are included in your stay. Guests also have access to a shared kitchen and garden. At Old Camp guests can also make use of the free shuttle service and tour desk. The reception area features a small gift shop.
In Nuuk we recommend you to book Vandrehuset 4. This well-rated property has a terrace and a shared lounge. Rooms include a terrace. All guest rooms in the hostel are equipped with a coffee machine. The rooms include a wardrobe. This property also has one of the best-rated locations in Nuuk! Guests are happier about it compared to other properties in the area.
What to do:
The area offers plenty of opportunities for different outdoor and nature activities, like fishing, coastal sailings and cruises. Greenland is also ideal for trekking – you will find smaller hikes as well as longer hikes.
Explore the beautiful nature and enjoy breathtaking scenery with Arctic flowers in the middle of tundra fields. Tour companies organize helicopter and boat trips to the glaciers.
Take a trip to Kulusuk, a small desolate island off the coast of Greenland.
While in Nuuk you should visit Greenland National Museum and Archives, Katuaq Cultural Centre or Nuuk Art Museum. In the capital of Greenland you’ll also find Santa’s Mailbox.
In winter, between November and March, you can see the Northern Lights. December through February are the best months because the nights are clearer. Aurora Borealis is best visible in Qaqortoq, Ittoqqortoormiit, and Kangerlussuaq.
The dog sledding season begins in September and normally ends in May. After mid-July to the end of August the snow is too soft but you can play with huskies and their pups. Lyngmarksbræen in Disko Island is one of the only places in Greenland that offers dog sledding in summer.
Pay a visit to Ilulissat, known as “The Town of Icebergs”.
You can also head to Arboretum Groenlandicum, an experimental forest, situated near Narsarsuaq.
Explore Nanortalik Open Air Museum.
The Greenlandic town of Qaqortoq turned itself into an open air sculpture gallery. The Stone & Man project exhibits a series of traditional carvings and sculptures. The stone artworks are carved into boulders and rocks.
Discover Summit Camp research station, located at the highest point of the Greenland ice sheet. To access it, you have to get a permit from the Danish Polar Center and the Home Rule of Greenland. Please note that during winter visits are infrequent.
