With nearly 20 active volcanoes and many tropical beaches along the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, Nicaragua is a haven for those who love adventures. This Central American country is filled with amazing natural beauty, cultural attractions and warm people.
Nicaragua contains 19 active volcanoes. Exploring a number of them can be done on foot. You can hike the slopes of them, swim in crater lakes, and peek over the rim. Cerro Negro, Central America's youngest volcano was born in 1850 and is very active. It has been producing occasional lava fountains and lava flows, and powerful explosive eruptions every few decades. Momotombo is a symmetrical stratovolcano rising as a peninsula above Lake Managua.
Telica is a very active volcano near Leon. The climax of an overnight full moon hike to the crater is looking down at the molten lava below. Masaya Volcano is protected by Nicaragua's first and largest national park. The area includes two volcanoes and five craters, as well as an underground tunnel formed by lava flows. You can observe the glowing lava in the crater of the volcano. Getting to Volcan Concepcion requires 10-12 h steep hike from Moyogalpa or Altagracia. Mombacho, the 1,100m volcano dominating Granada's skyline, offers a range of hikes through lush rainforest. There are three species of monkey, 168 species of bird and more than 100 types of orchid on the slopes of the volcano.
