Sapanta Merry Cemetery
Who says that death can't have its lighter side? Cimitirul Vesel
is an unusual cemetery in the village of Sapanta, famous for its colourful tombstones. The paintings on darkly humorous gravestones describe the people who are buried there. Over 600 illustrated wooden crosses bear the stories, dirty details, and final moments of their lives. The cheery pictures are annotated with surprising limericks, e.g. "Underneath this heavy cross lies my poor mother in law... Try not to wake her up. For if she comes back home, she’ll bite my head off."Sapanta Cemetery
diverges from the prevalent belief, that death is a moment filled with joy and anticipation for a better life, making people accept it more easily. The Merry Cemetery became an open-air museum and a national tourist attraction.Photo Credit: Danilovski / Shutterstock.com
