What to do:
Sardinia is excellent for families with children, couples and anybody looking for peace and quiet. The island is renowned for the most translucent azure blue sea in the Mediterranean, perfect for diving and snorkelling. Divers should explore the shipwrecks off Cagliari’s coast, the underwater Nereo Cave and Nora’s submerged Roman ruins.

At many beaches you can hire canoes, paddleboats and stand-up paddling equipment, while sailing and windsurfing courses can also be booked in several surfing schools. Parco Nazionale Arcipelago di La Maddalena is a popular destination among boaters.

Go to Cagliari, Sardinia’s historic capital, to see Santuario e Basilica di Bonaria, Palazzo Viceregio, Cattedrale di Santa Maria, and the Art Museum located in the former city hall.

You can also stop in charming Alghero, in the north-west coast, to find the Old Town full of restaurants, narrow streets and typical craft shops. Some landmarks of the city include the bastions and the defensive towers.

Near Iglesias, you can explore an abandoned mineral mine of Laveria Lamarmora (Nebida Laveria). Nestled on the sun-bleached cliff, the old village is slowly transforming into a coastal resort town.

Visit S’Archittu, a 15-meter tall arch in the west of Sardinia. You can walk over this natural wonder and dive off the rock bridge into the surrounding waters.

Capo Testa is popular for its breathtaking views and nice hiking terrain. Surrounded by enchanting coves and rugged rock formations, it’s a great place to walk around. On a clear day atop Capo Testa, Corsica can be recognized.

History buffs will love the remnants of Sardinia’s ancient nuraghic culture, as well as Carthaginian and Roman ruins, Pisan churches and Spanish Baroque.

Visit Giants’ grave of Coddu Vecchiu, thought to be remnants of Atlantis. These mysterious tombstones, dating from the Bronze Age, are located near Arzachena in northern part of the island.

Explore one of Domus de Janas chamber tombs from between 3400 and 2700 BC. For example you can visit Su Crucifissu Mannu in Porto Torres, or the necropolis at the site of Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero, consisting of 38 tombs. Other large sites are those of Montessu, near Villaperuccio, and of Sant’Andrea Priu at Bonorva.

Hike to Tiscali’s ruins. Explore one of numerous Bronze Age towers and settlements, known as nuraghi. Walk the coastal path to Cala Luna, where you can climb the limestone cliffs. Explore the canyon of Gola Su Gorropu.
