What to do:
With plenty of sunshine, mountains, sea and rivers, South Africa is perfect for outdoor activities. You can paraglide over Cape Town’s beaches, cycle through the vineyards, horse ride in the Drakensberg or hike to the top of Table Mountain. Visit Kimberley, the diamond capital of South Africa, to see the famous Big Hole. If you are not claustrophobic, take the guided tour of a once-operational diamond mine, which descends a staggering 840m below the earth.
Drive the Garden Route from Mossel Bay to the Storms River, admiring the diverse vegetation, numerous lakes and lagoons alongside the Indian Ocean. Visit Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley. With numerous well-kept roads, the Kruger National Park is also perfect for self-driving expeditions. Hermanus is famous for its shore-based whale-watching. A 10 km (6 mile) long cliff-side walk with built-in telescopes offers visitors plenty of opportunities to view these social animals. Whale-watching boat tours are available as well. Head to Rocktail Bay for excellent diving and snorkelling. You can even go cage diving with great white sharks!
Have a drink in the Baobab Tree Bar in Modjadjiskloof! The tree that locals claim is the largest baobab in the world is located in Limpopo Province, near the border of Zimbabwe. Standing at 22 meters high and 47 meters in diameter, the centre is hollow and has been turned into a bar. Try an exclusive safari in the world-renowned Sabi Sands or Tswalu Kalahari. For a family safari, we recommend the Madikwe Private Reserve, Pilanesberg or one of the Eastern Cape reserves (all malaria-free). Visit Durban’s scenic beaches and admire the English Colonial architecture of the city, enlivened by a mix of Zulu murals, Hindu temples, Islamic mosques, and Christian churches.
