Most people hardly realize that Ethiopia is one of the world’s oldest christian nations. Its capital, Addis Abeba, is renowned for its ubiquitous cafés, brutalist architecture and a uncommon cacophony of sounds. Ultimately, though, it’s Ethiopian epic landscapes that really capture the imagination – from the verdant peaks of the Simien Mountains, the Lalibela and sulphur fumaroles of the Danakil Depression, making this trip a truly amazing one!
Bahir Dar
Take a trip to the Blue Nile Falls, situated on the upper course of the river, about 30 km downstream from the town of Bahir Dar. The scenic waterfalls, known as Tis Abay in Amharic, are estimated to be between 37 and 45 meters high. A short distance from the falls, you will find the first stone bridge constructed in Ethiopia.
Admire the Great white pelicans on Lake Tana. The largest lake in Ethiopia is the source of the Blue Nile. The lake has a number of islands with about 19 of them having old churches and monasteries on them. It is believed that the remains of ancient Ethiopian emperors and treasures are kept in these islands. Discover Azwa Mariam Monastery to enjoy its colourful murals that tell biblical stories.
