Mount Teide (3 718 m / 12 198 ft), the highest peak of Spain, is the third highest volcanic structure and most voluminous in the world after Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea in Hawaii. In the era of European expansion, this volcano was considered to be the highest mountain in the world, since it was used as a navigation beacon in the Atlantic Ocean by southbound Spanish, Portuguese and British seafarers.
This active volcano, often covered with snow, can be reached by cable car (teleférico). You can get to the upper station located at 3,555 m above sea level and hike one of the trails. Come prepared for changes in temperature. At height of 3,260 m there's Altavista del Teide Refuge where you can spend one night. It's one of the best places to go stargazing in Europe. Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is home to one of the world's largest reflective telescopes. The moonlike landscape of Pico del Teide served as a movie set for "Star Wars".
