Armenia is home to some of the world's greatest religious shrines. Khor Virap Monastery, surrounded by vineyards of the Ararat plain, is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites. It features a jail cell, where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years. Discover Tatev Monastery, a masterpiece of medieval architecture, situated on the very edge of a deep and narrow valley. You can get to the monastery by a ropeway, which happens to be the longest in the world (5,752 meters).
The Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, as well as the Monastery of Geghard and the Upper Azat Valley, are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Monastery of Geghard, founded in the 4th century, was partially carved out of the adjacent mountain, surrounded by cliffs. There are also interesting monasteries in Kecharis, Sevanavank and Noravank.
