In Liwa you can hear the music of the desert that surrounds this sleepy oasis. When large amounts of sand are moved, a deep roaring tone comes from these mysterious dunes. The phenomenon is caused by the vibrations of the grains of sand as they rub together. The grains emit a sound when they fall on top of each other.
25 km south of Liwa Oasis, you'll find 1600-metre-long Moreeb dunes (Al Moreb Hill). With a reported 50 degree slope, and height of 300 metres, it is a perfect place for sand drags. Moreeb Hill is supposedly the tallest dune in the UAE, and one of the highest sand hills in the world.
