Singing Sand Dunes
In the Empty Quarter - the largest contiguous sand desert (erg) in the world, encompassing most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula - you can climb to the top of the orange dune and enjoy the fantastic views. In Liwa you can hear the music of the desert that surrounds this sleepy oasis. When large amounts of sand are moved, a deep roaring tone comes from these mysterious dunes. The phenomenon is caused by the vibrations of the grains of sand as they rub together. The grains emit a sound when they fall on top of each other.
25 km south of Liwa Oasis, you'll find 1600-metre-long Moreeb dunes (Al Moreb Hill). With a reported 50 degree slope, and height of 300 metres, it is a perfect place for sand drags. Moreeb Hill is supposedly the tallest dune in the UAE, and one of the highest sand hills in the world.
