In the capital of Sicily some parts of the old town centre have remained untouched since they were bombed during the war. Make sure you visit the monumental Praetorian Fountain and Teatro Massimo, the third biggest opera house in Europe and the biggest in Italy. If you want to have a taste of the authentic Sicilian life, go to the historical food markets: Vucciria, Ballarò e Capo. Tan lovers should head to Mondello Beach.
The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo provide a somewhat macabre tourist attraction. 8000 mummies placed here from 17C to 19C have been impressively well preserved due to the very dry air. The last burials date from the 1920s.
Palermo's Cappella Palatina and the Cattedrale di Monreale (about 15 km south of Palermo) are the jewels of Sicily's Arab-Norman crown.
