In the East you should head to Ragusa, rebuilt in two parts after the earthquake of 1693, on a wide limestone hill between two deep valleys. The lower, older town of Ragusa Ibla, and the higher Ragusa Superiore are separated by the Valle dei Ponti, a deep ravine crossed by four bridges.
Visit Ortygia, a small island which is the historical centre of the city of Syracuse. The island, also known as Città Vecchia (Old City), contains many historical landmarks, like Castello Maniace - a fortress dating back to the 11th century.
