There are hundreds of colourful festivals held throughout the country. Many of those fiestas are tied to the Roman Catholic calendar. Ati-Atihan Festival, a week-long street party in Kalibo, is the local mardi gras, peaking on the third Sunday of January.
Another local tradition is controversial Crucifixion re-enactment, held every Good Friday, as part of the local observance of Holy Week. Near the end of the Lenten season hundreds of Filipinos walk through the streets carrying heavy wooden crosses and whipping their backs until they bleed in imitation of Jesus Christ's passion and death.
