There are precious few places in Iceland that offer a dramatic landscape. If you like science fiction movies, you should certainly visit the epic United States Navy DC wreck on Sólheimasandur black sand beach. In 1973 the plane ran out of fuel and crashed in the South coast of Iceland. Fortunately, every passenger survived.
The
abandoned wreckage from the airplane crash is now one of Iceland’s most surreal and haunting photography spots. It is located between Skógafoss waterfall and the town of Vík. To get there, you have to drive a dirt access road to Sólheimajökull Glacier (coordinates: 63 27.546-19 21.887). 4x4 is highly recommended but if you dress warm you can also walk 4 km each way from the Road 1. From October to March you can go watching Northern Lights above the airplane wreck!
