Wizz Air expands in Bucharest: New Routes and Base at Baneasa Airport

Wizz Air, has announced a significant expansion of its operations in Bucharest. The airline will introduce three new routes, two additional state-of-the-art Airbus A321neo aircraft, and establish a permanent base at Bucharest Baneasa – Aurel Vlaicu International Airport starting April 1, 2025. This move will increase Wizz Air’s total fleet in Bucharest to 21 aircraft, reinforcing its position as Romania’s leading airline.

New Base at Bucharest Baneasa Airport

Wizz Air’s expansion at Bucharest Baneasa Airport marks a milestone in the airline’s Romanian operations. Starting April 1, 2025, the new base will complement existing flights to Naples (Italy) and Kraków (Poland) with new routes to:

  • Abu Dhabi, UAE (starting March 30, 2025)
  • London Luton, UK (starting April 1, 2025)
  • Warsaw, Poland (starting June 9, 2025)

The addition of the two Airbus A321neo aircraft will support Wizz Air’s commitment to expanding connectivity between Romania and destinations across Europe and beyond.

The airline’s summer 2025 schedule will feature nearly 750,000 additional seats, marking an 18% capacity increase compared to summer 2024. This growth underscores Bucharest’s importance as a key market for Wizz Air.

The low-cost carrier also announced three new routes from Bucharest Otopeni Airport:

  • Gran Canaria, Spain (starting June 17, 2025)
  • Frankfurt Hahn, Germany (starting August 1, 2025)
  • Friedrichshafen, Germany (starting August 2, 2025)

Additionally, Wizz Air will increase the frequency of flights on nine popular routes to destinations such as Dortmund, Memmingen, Stuttgart, Nice, and Pisa.

Commitment to Romania

Since launching its Romanian operations in 2006, Wizz Air has continually increased its investment in the country, recognizing it as a pivotal market. Today, the airline operates 175 routes from 13 Romanian airports, connecting travelers to 72 destinations in 24 countries. With six operational bases across the country and over 1,500 employees, Wizz Air plays a crucial role in Romania’s aviation sector and economy.

Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, highlighted the significance of the latest expansion: “As we continue to grow our network and boast a 55% market share in Romania, we are proud to establish a new base at Bucharest Baneasa Airport and launch three new routes from the capital. This expansion will provide almost 750,000 additional seats for passengers traveling to and from the capital this upcoming summer, securing an 18% capacity growth in Bucharest compared to last summer. We are excited to develop further toward our ‘WIZZ 500’ strategy, contributing to the Romanian economy and creating jobs.”
