Morocco is one of the most diverse countries in Africa, with high mountains, sweeping Sahara desert and rugged coastline. This fabulous destination will definitely amaze you with its magical cities and unspoiled nature. 1200-year-old Fez is one of the largest medieval cities in the world. Get lost in its lovely labyrinth of extremely narrow streets in the medina and make sure to explore a traditional leather tanning factory.
Central Morocco
Explore Marrakech, with its ageless medina, resembling a fairyland of ancient legends. Visit
Koutoubia mosque and El Bahia Palace >>. Go to the great plaza of
Djemaa el-Fna >>, the largest square in Africa, and listen to Arabic story tellers, watch magicians and Chleuh dancers. Take a hammam bath, go to the wonderful Jardin Majorelle and Ben Youssef Madrasa or just stroll the famous labyrinths of the medina and soak up the atmosphere of the bustling souks and spice markets. Be sure to buy a box of dates, argan oil and local spices. You can also visit the traditional Berber pharmacy. Remember that bargaining in the souks is expected!
The ancient fortified city of
Ait-Ben-Haddou, in Ouarzazate province, is another must-see sight. This traditional “ksar” is a group of earthen buildings surrounded by high defensive walls. The oldest constructions of this mostly abandoned village have been built in the 17th century. The mud-brick “kasbahs” have been the decor for a range of movies, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones TV series. Near Ouarzazate, you can also visit the magnificent Dades Gorge, Skoura - the Valley of One Thousand Kasbahs - and the perfumed Valley of Roses.
