Cape Verde is an archipelago consisting of 10 volcanic islands – Boa Vista, Sal, Maio, and others scattered in the central Atlantic Ocean.
Sal - The Sunniest Island
In the brown terrain of Sal you will find deserts, dry valleys, dormant volcanoes and kilometres of sandy beaches. The island is very flat, with the highest elevation of just 403 metres (Monte Grande). This is why clouds hardly have a chance to stay above it and there is almost no rain. For many years, the island was a centre for salt mining, which is where the name Sal comes from. Pedra Lume Salt Crater is a nice place to visit. You can enter the volcano crater and float in very dense salty water of the lake inside.
Santa Maria is the most populous city and the main tourist area at the south of the island. The most popular beach is Praia de Santa Maria. The Viveiro Botanical Garden & Zoo and Funana Casa da Cultura are worth visiting while in Santa Maria.
