Ghost towns
A few kilometres inland from the port of Lüderitz you will come across the ghost town of Kolmanskop, the former settlement of diamond miners. The town was founded after the discovery of the precious-stone deposits in southern Namibia in 1908. Kolmanskop, located in a former German colony, had its own power station, a hospital, sport-hall, swimming pool, ballroom, casino and railway line to Lüderitz.
After the collapse of the diamond market at the end of World War I, the city was abandoned and half-buried beneath a sea of sand. In 1956 the last family has left the town. Kolmanskop is a photographer’s dream come true. You can admire the well-preserved interior of the theatre, a 4-lane bowling alley and several renovated houses. Due to its location within the restricted area (Sperrgebiet), tourists need to buy a permit at the gate into the town. Nearby there are also two other ghost towns of similar genesis - Elizabeth Bay and Pomona.
