This natural amphitheatre scoured out by glaciers is a favourite destination of hikers and mountain enthusiasts. Victor Hugo called it "Nature’s Colosseum". Constructed of granite rock walls rising 3,000 meters, it's the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in France to be listed on the basis of both natural and cultural criteria.
This area of outstanding natural beauty is part of the Pyrenees National Park. From the village of Gavarnie there is an easy 45-minute walk alongside the river, carved out by a vast glacier. Explore the chapels, mountain huts and shacks that dot the mountainside. You can also visit the magnificent cirques of Lescun, Estaubé or Troumouse, each with its distinctive character.
