Boasting three of the ancient Silk Road’s most important cities (Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand), Uzbekistan was once the cradle of culture and trade. Nowadays, it is known for well-preserved Islamic architecture with shimmering minarets and mosaic tile domes.
One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia, the former capital of Uzbekistan is a crossroad and melting pot of the world's cultures. Prospering from its location on the Silk Road, at times it was one of the greatest cities of Central Asia.
The major attractions in Uzbekistan's second largest city include the famous Registan Complex, Bibi-Khanym Mosque (a modern replica), as well as the Shakhi-Zinda Necropolis. You can also visit the Gur Emir Mausoleum, Ulugh Beg's Observatory and numerous madrasas (Tillya Kori Madrasah, Ulugh Beg Madrasah, Sher Dor Madrasah). In 2001, UNESCO added the city to its World Heritage List.
