With more than 50 castles, Luxembourg is an authentic fairytale destination. The ruins of the fortresses are among its main attractions. Esch-sur-Sûre Castle have been abandoned for over a hundred years. First built around 920, it was originally an eight-meter-tall tower atop the tallest hill in the area. Over centuries, it was expanded upon, creating a castle-like structure, surrounded by a village.
Beaufort Castle in eastern Luxembourg is part Medieval, part Renaissance. First built in the 11th century as a small fortress on a rock, it kept expanding. By the early 20th century, a new owner restored the ruins and opened to the public. Vianden Castle was constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman 'castellum'. Set on a rocky promontory, it stands at a height of 310 metres, overlooking the River Our. You can also explore Larochette Castle, Clervaux Castle, Bourscheid Castle and Fort Thüngen.
