Geothermal springs
One of the main highlights of São Miguel Island is its geothermal activity. You can enjoy a bath in the hot water of Caldeira Velha near Ribeira Grande town. The natural thermal spring feeds two natural pools with temperatures of 27 C (80 F) and 38 C (100 F). Soaking in mineral water under the waterfall is amazing experience!
The Furnas area has several hot springs and geothermal fields with bubbling mud pools. In the Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas you can watch how the locals use the hot soil to cook "cozido", a traditional stew consisting of beef, pork, vegetables and sweet potatoes. The Terra Nostra Gardens feature a thermal swimming pool surrounded by more than 2,000 different trees. Nearby spas use mud and mineral water for therapeutic purposes.
