Northern Cyprus
The island has been shaped by its history and its unique position in the east of the Mediterranean Sea. Inhabited by Greek people for millennia, it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in the 16th century. In 1914 the British Empire annexed the island. Cyprus was finally granted its independence in 1960 but since 1974 it's split into two. Divided into the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north, it is one of the most intriguing islands of the Mediterranean.
The beautiful sandy beaches of Northern Cyprus still attract thousands of tourists despite the division of the island between Greece and Turkey through the capital city of Nicosia. This northern region has reputation as a corner of unspoiled nature. Visit the city of Kyrenia, noted for its historic harbour, the Venetian Kyrenia Castle, the ruin of Saint Hilarion Castle and the Bellapais Monastery.
